J.R.R. Tolkien's story from 1937 has become a childrens' classic; it certainly made a big impression on me when I read it first. The Hobbit is Mr Bilbo Baggins, a quiet and unassuming resident of the Shire. Bilbo encounters the wizard Gandalf, who introduces him to 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. They hire Bilbo as a burglar, and set off on an adventure to reclaim the stolen treasure of the dwarves from the drogon, Smaug the Wicked, who lives in the Lonely Mountain on the far side of Wilderland.
Along the way they encounter Elves, Trolls, Goblins, Eagles, Wargs, Beorn the shapechanger, giant spiders, Wood Elves and Lakemen, before they finally arrive at their destination where Bilbo comes face to face with the dragon.
