Solas - The Turtle - The Earth Clan The Turtle is the Totem of the Earth Clan and covers the three lunar totems, the Squirrel, Badger and Goose. In Native American tradition the Turtle symbolises the Earth and the continent of America is known as Turtle Island. The Bird Tribes, the great spiritual teachers of the Native Americans dwelt on the continent of Turtle Island through the long ages before Europeans discovered America. The Túatha Dé Danann were the last of the Bird Tribes to live in Europe. The turtle is remembered for its steady, tenacious qualities in the fable of the race between the hare and the tortoise. The hare was fully confident that it could beat the tortoise with ease, so hare stopped and had a sleep. In the meantime the tortoise continued to plod on regardless and so ended up winning the race. The curved hard shell of the turtle represents the crust of the earth which contains and protects the soft internal organs. People of the Earth Clans can learn much from the deliberate, practical and methodical example set by the Turtle. |
